Clinical and Statistical STudy of Mouth and Pharynex Tumors

Abstract
During the past 23 years from 1958 to 1980, 363 patients were diagnostically confirmed as the tumor of the mouth and pharynx by histopathological study at the Department of Otolaryngology, National Medical Center. Among Them, 96 cases were benign and 267 cases were malignant. A clinical and statistical study of the cases was made and the following result were obtained : 1) Sex ratio between male and female was 1 : 1 in the benign tumors and 3.3 : 1 in the malignent tumors. 2) Age distribution showed even distribution with the mean age of 31.2 years in the benign tumors and 76.8% of the malignant tumors were distributed between 40 and 69 years of age with the mean age of 53.2 years. 3) The most frequent site of the benign tumors was the palate (40.6%) and that of the malignant tumors was the tongue (37.5%). 4) The most frequent tumors were the pleomorphic adenoma and the squamous cell carcinoma in benign and malignant tumors respectively. 5) By T.N.M. classification, 71.5% of the malignant cases were belonged to stage III and stage IV. 6) The most frequent initial symptoms were mass in the benign tumors of the mouth, pain in the malignant tumors of the mouth and hypopharynx and the nasal obstruction in both of the benign and malignant tumors of the epipharynx. 7) The most frequent presenting symptoms were mass in the benign tumors of the mouth, pain in the malignant tumors of the mouth and hypopharynx, nasal obstruction in the benign tumors of the epipharynx and headache in the malignant tumors of the epipharynx.
